During the Hay Fever season it is recommended to use natural remedies and ways to heal the body as medications tend to suppress symptoms and cause other health implications.

Liver congestion and dehydration are factors when it comes to hay fever and allergy symptoms so you may want to incorporate one or more of the following…

  • Substitute caffeinated and sugar laden drinks for water when possible. Introduce more natural foods that are free of chemicals and artificial additives, gluten-free whole grains, dairy-free alternatives and no added sugar foods as much as you can.
  • Replace toiletries and cleaning products that contain harmful chemicals (which cause damage to your liver and other organs) with natural and organic ones.
  • Locally grown raw honey desensitizes the body from local pollen – take 2 tablespoons daily before the hay fever seaseon preferably.

Nutrition and food are big factors when it comes to your mood. There are other natural ways to improve mood although not trying to ignore your feelings is so beneficial. Doing your best to enjoy life by doing fun things is beneficial.

Here are my top tips to keep your mood and energy levels more sustained from natural ways…

  • Eating regular meals and snacks if you need to that consist of a complex gluten/wheat-free carbohydrate, healthy protein & essential fats with lots of colourful vegetables. Watch for hidden sugars (which will cause a mood drop) in ready made foods and sauces.
  • Instead of a caffeinated or sugary drink, which will cause an initial high and energy boost, choose filtered water and caffeine-free drinks such as Rooibos/Redbush tea or a natural herbal tea.
  • Vitamin B deficiency is common with depression and anxiety. B3 (Niacin) is especially beneficial although you may experience a flushed face (known as niacin flush) which means you have reached saturation point with it. Get some guidance to dosage before taking.
  • Taking a Vitamin D supplement is extremely beneficial for mood and energy. Many people are lacking in this, especially if you don’t get out in the sunshine or wear sunscreen etc. I recommend Vitamin D Liquid by Nature’s Answer, or Vitamin D/K2 liquid by Thorne Research or Nutri.  Also the spray by BetterYou which comes in different dosages.
  • Magnesium is beneficial for mood and helps with energy and feeling calm, as well as many other health conditions. It’s National Smile Month 15th May – 15th June 2017 so I thought I would share some tips to improve the quality of your teeth, oral health and have a sparkling smile…

  • Magnesium helps strengthen enamel on the teeth as well as improving many health conditions. You can rub the Magnesium oil onto your body as it absorbs into your bloodstream directly through the skin. The brand BetterYou is my favourite.   • Avoiding refined sugary foods and drinks is recommended for your teeth and general health too. It is best to eat more whole natural foods whenever possible. Coffee can cause staining on the teeth, and tea to a lesser degree. Coffee also affects blood sugar fluctuations and calcium loss. If you are drinking herbal teas consume the most natural ones without citric acid as this damage tooth enamel. 
  • Improving your gut health can improve the quality of your teeth and gums so I would recommend good quality probiotics. The best one I’ve found is by Rhythm Health.   • Taking a kelp supplement could help improve quality of the teeth and make them feel cleaner with less plaque accumulating.   • Flossing your teeth regularly will be beneficial to clear food from in between your teeth. I recommend natural brands such as Woobamboo and Desert Essence which are available from Natural Dispensary – see details below. 
  • Chewing on Frankincense resin can improve oral health as it is anti-inflammatory and has antiseptic properties. It can help relieve toothache, mouth sores, bad breath and swollen gums. Chewing the resin also makes your teeth and gums strong. It increases saliva flow, which in turn can help reduce dental caries. Do NOT chew on the poor quality resin (such as the brown one) and only chew a very high quality resin such as Royal Green Hojari. It is stickier than normal gum although it is safe if you happen to swallow any as it has many therapeutic properties.   • You can get Toxaprevent Halistop Chewable Tablets which bind and remove compounds containing ammonium odorants from the mouth and gums for the natural regulation of halitosis. The tablets also bind and remove histamine, improving wound healing in the mouth and reducing inflammation of the gums  for bad breath.
  • Activated charcoal can be used to help whiten the teeth. It is slightly abrasive so I only recommend doing this once a week. Put a small amount of the powder on a toothbrush, or break open a capsule. It will initially make your teeth and mouth black although this can be rinsed off leaving your teeth looking and feeling cleaner & whiter.   • Choose a natural toothpaste and mouthwash as conventional varieties contain sweeteners and artificial ingredients. Fluoride may help strengthen the enamel although not the quality of the teeth and can cause negative health issues. With it being Sleep Awareness week I thought I would share my top tips for having a better night’s sleep. A good night’s sleep is very healing as it helps to cleanse and repair vital organs in the body. It helps physically, mentally and emotionally and it has an impact on weight and the way you age also.

Here are my top tips to get a better night’s sleep.

  • Keep your blood sugar balanced by eating regular meals starting with a healthy breakfast that contains no sugar or artificial ingredients. Eat as healthily as possible throughout the day and finish your last meal of the day 3-4 hours before you go to bed, otherwise your body will be focusing on digesting your food rather then preparing itself for sleep and healing during the night.
  • Do some exercise you enjoy during the day and if possible get out in the fresh air. Avoid strenuous exercise later in the evening. Some gentle Yoga or Qi Gong would be fine though.
  • Anything that helps you to reduce stress and feel calmer will be beneficial such as walking in nature, regular massage & healing.
  • If you drink caffeinated drinks then it is best to switch to caffeine free drinks from midday onwards, however, it can take many hours for caffeine to get out of your system so you may find that any amount can affect your sleep or just one cup in the morning might be maximum. In the evening have a natural relaxing herbal tea such as chamomile, lime blossom or valerian.
  • To help relieve anxiety naturally before you sleep take the natural supplement L-Theanine and Lemon Balm by Viridian. These can be taken as and when you need them and are not addictive.
  • Make sure your room is very dark as this helps the production of melatonin which not only promotes sleep, it also improves immune system. Black out lining or blinds would be beneficial although I would also recommend wearing an eye mask; opt for a natural material such as silk.
  • Choose wool bedding (pillow and duvet) as this helps to regulate temperature more than other materials. It can keep skin dry and comfortable and maintains warmth in winter and coolness in the summer.
  • For at least an hour before bed stop using electrical equipment and before you go to sleep turn off or unplug anything electrical in your sleeping area; such as mobile phone, computer, TV etc. If you have to have to use a computer, mobile phone or have the lights on before bed then wear these glasses to cut out the blue light – CLICK HERE for more details.
  • Instead of using an EMF clock or mobile phone as an alarm clock, have a silent sweep clock (which you can buy cheaply on the internet).
  • Take the rare trace mineral Indium* to improve the quality of your sleep. It also has many other benefits such as strengthening your immune system, improve stamina, skin texture, hormonal fluctuations etc.

  • Do your best to be in bed by 10.30pm to fall in line with your internal circadian biological clock. You are more likely to get into a better sleep at this time as waiting until after 11pm may give you an energy boost making it difficult to nod off.
  • If you have a poor night’s sleep or just want more energy and to feel healthier then listen while lying down to a Yoga Nidra relaxation session (you can get many on YouTube) or you can find a class, which is sometimes part of a physical yoga class. It is said each 15 minutes is equivalent to a 1 hour sleep.

Coconut oil has been popular for a while although do you know many of its uses and benefits? If not then read on…

  • Add it to your breakfast to help keep you fuller for longer.
  • It can help reduce any fungi, bacteria and viruses due to the lauric acid contained in it.
  • It is a healthier fat to cook with, although, if you don’t like the coconut flavour then you can get an unflavoured variety.
  • Use it as a spread instead of margarine or butter.
  • Apply a thin layer to an area to be shaved and then shave in your normal way.
  • Beneficial for eczema, dandruff and cradle cap.
  • Can be used as a body moisturiser and good to heal sunburn.
  • It is great as a make up remover.
  • Massage into cuticles to help soften them.
  • Apply to cold sores to promote healing.

If you are concerned that fats could damage your health and make you put on weight then be aware that not all fats are the same.

If you are consuming unhealthy fats which can be called trans fats and hydrogenated fats which are are processed and heated to a high temperature, then these can actually cause health and hormonal issues and weight gain. Foods bought in shops such as biscuits, cakes, snacks, margarine, commercially packaged items, convenience foods, poor quality foods etc. usually contain these fats. Poor quality carbohydrates are best avoided and sugar as it turns to fat which has negative health implications. 

However, good fats which are known as essential fats and omega fats can improve your health and help you to balance your hormones and weight. 

Some fat facts…

  • Essential fats such as flax oil, sesame oil, olive oil, hemp oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, pumpkin seed oil etc. are the fats which help to keep your appetite at bay.
  • Adding these fats to your food will help keep you fuller and satisfied for longer so you won’t feel as hungry and be tempted to snack on sweets and crisps etc.
  • A low fat diet is likely to health and hormonal issues, also causing carbohydrate cravings which may lead to weight gain.

How to introduce healthy fats into your diet…

  • Pour on some oil onto meals. If you do cook with fats then the use coconut oil, or you can use either sesame oil or olive oil at very low temperatures, adding some coconut oil (which you can get flavourless). 
  • As a spread use butter or ghee instead of margarine and if you are vegan then use coconut oil (flavoured or unflavoured).  
  • Take a fish oil supplement such as Organic Scandinavian Rainbow Trout Oil by Viridian, which comes in liquid and now available in capsules.   • Raw nuts and seeds in moderation are great to eat regularly although they do contain enzyme inhibitors which can make them hard to digest.  To help alleviate this soak them for approximately 8 hours in sea salted water, rinse and eat straight away or make a batch and dry a very low temperature in the oven and then they can be stored in the fridge for future use. If you feel like new beginnings are afoot and you don’t feel in the right frame of mind and/or need some extra vitality to help you fire on all cylinders then read my 8 top tips below…

  • Instead of trying to push away feelings of sadness or other emotions do your best to be present and feel any feelings/symptoms as what you resist persists! It is said where attention goes then energy flows so you may notice that these emotions clear as you put your attention to your symptoms and feelings.
  • Your mind doesn’t know whether something is imagined or real so visualise smiling and sending appreciation to each of your organs and notice your cells becoming lighter and healthier.
  • Take some time to relax and mentally ask your body what it needs you to do to feel better. You may get an answer coming to you, such as: rest more, do a certain exercise that you’ll enjoy, eat more healthily, get a massage, go and see a specific practitioner, mix with positive like-minded people etc. Notice any signs over time to what could help you.
  • Look for healthy enjoyable alternatives to caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar, wheat, dairy and processed foods over time so you can replace them easily and effortlessly so you won’t crave what could be causing you fatigue and health issues. Instead of refined carbohydrates opt for whole grains and products made with these; brown rice, millet and also quinoa and buckwheat which are used as grains. Introduce some vegetable proteins even if you’re a meat eater as they are less acidic and dehydrating; such as beans, pulses, legumes. Choose different colours and varieties of vegetables as they contain water, minerals and fibre.
  • Research has stated that Nano Gold could greatly improve brain & nervous system functioning and act as a catalyst for hormones such as dopamine which may help to make you feel happier and lose your sugar addiction.
