With it being Sleep Awareness week I thought I would share my top tips for having a better night’s sleep. A good night’s sleep is very healing as it helps to cleanse and repair vital organs in the body. It helps physically, mentally and emotionally and it has an impact on weight and the way you age also.

Here are my top tips to get a better night’s sleep.

  • Keep your blood sugar balanced by eating regular meals starting with a healthy breakfast that contains no sugar or artificial ingredients. Eat as healthily as possible throughout the day and finish your last meal of the day 3-4 hours before you go to bed, otherwise your body will be focusing on digesting your food rather then preparing itself for sleep and healing during the night.
  • Do some exercise you enjoy during the day and if possible get out in the fresh air. Avoid strenuous exercise later in the evening. Some gentle Yoga or Qi Gong would be fine though.
  • Anything that helps you to reduce stress and feel calmer will be beneficial such as walking in nature, regular massage & healing.
  • If you drink caffeinated drinks then it is best to switch to caffeine free drinks from midday onwards, however, it can take many hours for caffeine to get out of your system so you may find that any amount can affect your sleep or just one cup in the morning might be maximum. In the evening have a natural relaxing herbal tea such as chamomile, lime blossom or valerian.
  • To help relieve anxiety naturally before you sleep take the natural supplement L-Theanine and Lemon Balm by Viridian. These can be taken as and when you need them and are not addictive.
  • Make sure your room is very dark as this helps the production of melatonin which not only promotes sleep, it also improves immune system. Black out lining or blinds would be beneficial although I would also recommend wearing an eye mask; opt for a natural material such as silk.
  • Choose wool bedding (pillow and duvet) as this helps to regulate temperature more than other materials. It can keep skin dry and comfortable and maintains warmth in winter and coolness in the summer.

  • Instead of using an EMF clock or mobile phone as an alarm clock, have a silent sweep clock (which you can buy cheaply on the internet).

  • Do your best to be in bed by 10.30pm to fall in line with your internal circadian biological clock. You are more likely to get into a better sleep at this time as waiting until after 11pm may give you an energy boost making it difficult to nod off.
  • If you have a poor night’s sleep or just want more energy and to feel healthier then listen while lying down to a Yoga Nidra relaxation session (you can get many on YouTube) or you can find a class, which is sometimes part of a physical yoga class. It is said each 15 minutes is equivalent to a 1 hour sleep.

If you are concerned that fats could damage your health and make you put on weight then be aware that not all fats are the same.

If you are consuming unhealthy fats which can be called trans fats and hydrogenated fats which are are processed and heated to a high temperature, then these can actually cause health and hormonal issues and weight gain. Foods bought in shops such as biscuits, cakes, snacks, margarine, commercially packaged items, convenience foods, poor quality foods etc. usually contain these fats. Poor quality carbohydrates are best avoided and sugar as it turns to fat which has negative health implications. 

However, good fats which are known as essential fats and omega fats can improve your health and help you to balance your hormones and weight. 

Some fat facts…

  • Essential fats such as flax oil, sesame oil, olive oil, hemp oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, pumpkin seed oil etc. are the fats which help to keep your appetite at bay.
  • Adding these fats to your food will help keep you fuller and satisfied for longer so you won’t feel as hungry and be tempted to snack on sweets and crisps etc.
  • A low fat diet is likely to health and hormonal issues, also causing carbohydrate cravings which may lead to weight gain.

How to introduce healthy fats into your diet…

  • Pour on some oil onto meals. If you do cook with fats then the use coconut oil, or you can use either sesame oil or olive oil at very low temperatures, adding some coconut oil (which you can get flavourless). 
  • As a spread use butter or ghee instead of margarine and if you are vegan then use coconut oil (flavoured or unflavoured).

If you feel like new beginnings are afoot and you don’t feel in the right frame of mind and/or need some extra vitality to help you fire on all cylinders then read my 8 top tips below…

  • Instead of trying to push away feelings of sadness or other emotions do your best to be present and feel any feelings/symptoms as what you resist persists! It is said where attention goes then energy flows so you may notice that these emotions clear as you put your attention to your symptoms and feelings.
  • Your mind doesn’t know whether something is imagined or real so visualise smiling and sending appreciation to each of your organs and notice your cells becoming lighter and healthier.
  • Take some time to relax and mentally ask your body what it needs you to do to feel better. You may get an answer coming to you, such as: rest more, do a certain exercise that you’ll enjoy, eat more healthily, get a massage, go and see a specific practitioner, mix with positive like-minded people etc. Notice any signs over time to what could help you.

It’s the Spring Equinox on Monday 20th March. A time that our bodies are naturally detoxifying giving us the opportunity to release the old to welcome the new. Stress or relax

If you are feeling like your life is chaotic and you feel like you need to slowing down and appreciate your life then hopefully one or more of my tips will help you…

  • Take breaks in between jobs and get out for a walk in nature as much as you can. Have a massage when possible as it could help reduce stress and significantly lower heart rate, cortisol and insulin levels.

By preparing your body before the hay fever season can help to lessen or avoid symptoms that may be causing you distress.

My tips are designed to boost the immune system, improve energy and improve health so even if you don’t experience hay fever then you could feel better generally.

  • When the body is dehydrated you are more likely to experience hay fever and allergy symptoms so I would recommend that you substitute caffeinated and sugar laden drinks for water when possible. Introduce a cleaner diet with more natural foods that are free of chemicals and artificial additives, gluten-free whole grains, dairy-free alternatives and no added sugar foods as much as you can.
  • Consuming local honey may help you develop immunity to local pollen. There is a product called Apimist Xtra Pollen which can help to to build up your resistance to hayfever, boost your immune system, increase energy and improve your general health too. Your body can naturally cleanse at certain times such as when it is a full or new moon. It has been a challenging time during February 2017 as there was been a lunar eclipse at the full moon on Saturday 11th February and a solar eclipse during the new moon on Sun 26th February.
When toxins are leaving the cells you may feel uncomfortable especially if you can’t eliminate toxins through the designated channels naturally i.e. bowels and skin. For example if your lymphatic system is clogged up then the toxins & fats etc. will be stored here and cause uncomfortable symptoms and health issues.
Here are some of my tips to take the pressure of your organs and help your body cleanse more easily and naturally…

Sleep is extremely healing as it helps to cleanse and repair vital organs in the body. It is healing for the mind and body. It can help you feel better on every level and look better too (which is why it can be referred to as beauty sleep). It even has an impact on weight too.

Here are my top tips to get a better night’s sleep.

  • Eat as healthily as possible throughout the day and finish your last meal of the day 3-4 hours before you go to bed, otherwise your body will be focusing on digesting your food rather then preparing itself for sleep and healing during the night.
  • Do some exercise you enjoy during the day and if possible get out in the fresh air. Avoid strenuous exercise later in the evening. Some gentle Yoga or Qi Gong would be ideal.
  • Anything that helps you to reduce stress and feel calmer will be beneficial such as regular massage & healing.
  • If you drink caffeinated drinks then it is best to switch to caffeine free drinks from midday onwards.   • Do your best to be in bed by 10.30pm to fall in line with your internal circadian biological clock. You are more likely to get into a better sleep at this time as waiting until after 11pm may give you an energy boost making it difficult to nod off.
  • If you have a poor night’s sleep or just want more energy, to feel healthier etc. listen to a Yoga Nidra relaxation session. It is said each 15 minutes is equivalent to a 1 hour sleep.
