I used to find it impossible to grow my hair past a certain length before it went wispy and lacklustre. Having naturally curly hair meant it never looked glossy, just quite dry and on the brittle side with a greasy scalp. However, once I started eating a healthier diet, taking supplements and and using natural products I have found my hair quality better than ever and instead of having to wash it every other day, I can now leave it for about a week. I will share some of my tips…

I found that eliminating dairy products and sugar has a positive impact on my hair as well as my health. I started eating whole grains, plant based protein and organic animal protein, a wide variety of vegetables and sea vegetables.

The sea vegetables, which contain 10x minerals than land vegetables, consisted mainly of Nori (especially when I made my own sushi – without raw fish), Arame,  Dulse, Wakame and Hijiki, which is the most renowned sea vegetable to promote healthier hair as it purifies the blood of damaging toxins and apparently has 16 times more calcium than milk per unit measure. Also eight times the amount of iron as beef. According to Japanese folklore, eating hijiki is better than any shampoo when it comes to keeping hair thick and glossy.

I found that antioxidant supplements such as Pycnogenol (aka Pine Bark Extract) help to increase the blood flow to the scalp and provides nutrients necessary for producing strong healthy hair.

Collagen helps to condition the hair if you take this internally. If you aren’t vegetarian or vegan then bone broth will be beneficial as it provides natural collagen. You can make your own from organic chicken carcass from Able and Cole* or buy it from there or any other shops.

Did you know that most hair care products & treatments contain a cocktail of chemicals that release toxins into the body via the scalp and skin? Even just inhaling them can have negative health implications. They contain chemicals like resins, plastics, waxes and silicones. These are derived from petroleum by-products formulated to cosmetically coat your hair shaft. They coat the surface of your hair which creates shine and volume so your locks look glossy and gorgeous. Over time though these very ingredients build up on your hair shaft making it look lifeless, dull, frizzy, and difficult to manage. This is the reason that you will be told to rotate your shampoo and hair products.

The toxic ingredients to look for that will have this effect:

  • Dimethacon
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Acrylates
  • Copolymers
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone
  • Methylisothiazolinone
  • Paraffin Waxes

The good news is that there are natural alternatives that contain healthy ingredients to give a natural shine and improve the condition of your hair without causing any harmful side effects.

My current natural favourite shampoo is Khadi Rose Hair Repair Shampoo.  It doesn’t have much of a lather although it  leaves my hair feeling clean, full of body, shine and has a delightful aroma. There are several varieties of Khadi shampoos as well as hair powders, hair colours and hair oils which you can find on websites such as Pravera Direct and All Natural Me

Another shampoo I like is Sante Moisturising Shampoo which contains ingredients such as Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Hydrolyzed Silk, Arginine etc.

I do like to use a natural hair gel to stop my hair going frizzy and I have been using the Sante Styling Gel which comes in a handy tube size so can be taken out and about easily.

He Shou Wu (aka Fo-Ti) is a supplement I like which  has a long history of use as a hair growth and rejuvenation tonic. It has been reported to demonstrate a remarkable ability to reverse hair loss and restore rich colour to white or graying hair. It apparently has a harmonising effect on the endocrine system (hormone-producing glands), containing a high zinc content which may account to the beneficial effects on hair growth and restoration. There are varieties that are unprepared versions which can have negative implications. My favourite brand of prepared He Shou Wu is by Hybrid Herbs which is also available from Natural Dispensary – see details below.

I also include natural supplements such as Gourmet Spirulina, Brewer’s Yeast tablets, Marine Phytoplankton, Chlorella etc. All available from Natural Dispensary – see details below.

You can buy many of the natural health supplements mentioned from Natural Dispensary – www.naturaldispensary.co.uk  Complete the online registration form, putting Julie Silver in the box which asks for the name of the Practitioner who referred you. *Able and Cole will delivery organic bone broth, organic chicken carcass, vegetables, meat, fish, and many grocery products. As well as changing what I ate and introducing natural products I also found ways to relax and reduce stress, such as conscious breathing techniques, Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Qi Gong etc, which helped my hair growth as well as my general health.
